Michael F. Seems to have street smarts. He made JRM as guilty merely from his behaviour inside. He didnt need to see the evidence.
But RP, why do you refer to JRM as your hero, when you seem to acknowledge that he did this crime. How do you square that circle?

It does show determination, but not character. They are different.
Hitler was determined to kill all the jews he could, but nobody thinks he had character.
Stalin was very determined as well. Millions of innocent people died on his orders.

You have to realize why he originally made the claim of innocence. It was to get away with the crime. To avoid responsibility.  That was selfish, the opposite of good character.
And the first step in his plan to avoid responsibility was the cold and cruel murder of little Kristen. 
Everything he has done since then has been aimed at sticking to his story. Which he has hoped all along would work in his favor, to get him out on appeal, or on a technicality. If he were to admit his guilt, getting out is less likely.
And his claim of innocence still gets attention, as in the People magazine cover a few years back. Not every murderer makes the cover of People.
Real character would be to admit his guilt and seek forgiveness. It might even help society understand this crime better and possibly prevent a future family annihilator.
That would be an unselfish act. And it would be hard. Sticking to his story is easy.

I have no more issues than anybody else on this Forum who follows this old moldy case
